Automatic Door Accident: What should the door's owner do?

Note: These recommendations are made specifically towards the automatic door. The door owner should follow their own internal procedures with regards to their premises when there has an accident or incident resulting in an injury. In my experience, if there has been an incident with an automatic door and someone has been injured, the owner should consider these steps with regards to the automatic door:

Take the door out of automatic operation - Have the door inspected (and repaired or adjusted as required) by a qualified technician before the door is put back into automatic operation. Qualified door technicians will be certified by the American Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers (AAADM). Maintain all records from this and follow-on servicing and save any parts that are replaced during the servicing.

Read the Owner's Manual for your door (obtain it if you don't already have it) - Read it and follow the instructions in the manual. This step is also what the door owner should be doing regardless of whether or not they have had an accident with the door. The owner should obtain the manual for their specific door, but all door owner's manuals I am aware of (and the AAADM standard door owner's manual) require the minimum of:

Daily Safety Checks - Ensure your employees are trained in the daily safety checks called out in the door owner's manual and that they perform them every day as called out in the manual. There should also be a sticker on the door (typically the frame) that outlines a generic daily safety check;

Proper stickers, decals and labels - These must be applied and maintained on your doors. If decals are removed
or cannot be read, request labels to be replaced when calling for service;

Periodic check and certification - Automatic doors should be checked and certified by an AAADM qualified inspector at least annually.

Pedestrian Traffic Patterns - The AAADM standard door owner's manual states: "Observe traffic routing to the door. Plan traffic routing so persons will approach the door straight on and not from an angle." Many sensors for automatic doors don't "see" well, or even have blind spots at the outside edges of the doors.

If there are any problems, or if you are unsure about the safe performance of the door, discontinue operation immediately and secure the door in a safe manner. Call your authorized automatic door professional for repairs.

I have substantial experience with door cases as an automatic door expert witness. These cases are often more complex than they first appear; requiring a consideration of design, installation, maintenance and adherence to safety standards.
